INCOMPATIBILITY
Incompatibility has been cited as the most common reason for messy divorces. Some differences add spice to life and one person is compensated by his/her partner’s strength. For instance, an assertive woman has a mild-mannered hubby. However, couples do not always see eye to eye when the differences are too big.
Some instances of incompatibility are an extrovert marrying an intro¬vert, a self-centered individual marrying a caring person, a religious person tying the knot with an atheist, an intellectual getting married to someone frivolous.
Girls sometimes fondly believe that a guy will change his entrenched beliefs and ideas after marriage. In India, a girl marries a man and acquires his family as a value addition — whether she likes it or not. The Indian male is a pampered species and interference from his parents is a common occurrence.
Sometimes a guy is educated but his folks are not and consequently, they are very narrow-minded. He may be tied to his mother’s apron strings. A wise girl would consider whether the family backgrounds are similar before taking the final plunge. In inter-community unions where the in-laws are prejudiced from the start against their future bahu. It is advisable for the newly-weds to stay separately, at least till the girl manages to win her in-laws over.
Ironically, when 2 people are too much alike, a marriage could flounder. If both are ambitious and dominee¬ring, the twosome may end up regularly screaming at each other or throwing crockery at each other, much to the entertainment of the neighbours.
Young women would do well to take the advice of their parents or elders before making rash decisions, But, ironically, parents themselves are sometimes responsible for the marital problems of their offspring,
They are, at times, so eager to get their daughters settled because of the fear of facing criticism and censor in their social and family circle, that they marry their daughters off to guys whose antecedents are suspect.
