DRIVING DOCUMENTS
Most of us drive within the city, as part of our day-to-day routine. Presuming that you are like most other lady-drivers, using what is known as a private non-commercial vehicle sporting white alpha-numeric registration marks on a black number-plate, there are certain laws regarding the documentation essential to make your vehicle, and you ,streetlegal. 1.REGISTRATION MARKS : Your vehicle must display registration marks, legibly and clearly and in the correct sizes as per the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), at all times, whether being driven or
Stationary. This applies to brand new vehicles also; there is absolutely no condoning the absence of registration marks or the presence of an “Applied For” tag. The penalty for operating, owning or being responsible for any motor vehicle is seizure followed by prosecution.
2. Driving license: It is a condition of owning a motor vehicle that it shall be driven or operated only by a person suitably licensed to do so for that class of vehicle. So, you are supposed to carry your driving license in original when you are driving a vehicle. On demand, and that too only by a uniformed policeman or person from the Transport Department of the rank of Sub-Inspector and above, you are obliged to show your driving licence. If anybody below this rank demands your license, you may seek to meet his superior officer before showing your driving license.
There is a tendency on the part of the lower ranks within these authorities to “seize” your driving licence; they have no right to do so. Unless, of course, they claim that you have committed an offence for which they are’ issuing you a challan or summons and then formally seize or detain your licence, with proper receipt.
