THE ART OF EATING
THE ART OF EATING
Utensils
The correct use of utensils is easy to remember once you get the hang of it.
• Always use your utensils from the outside in. Simply put, this means that the fork furthest to the outside is the one to be used for the appetiser. For the next course, use the next fork, and so on. The same rule applies to the spoons and knives.
• If you take a long pause between two courses, always make sure that you place the fork on the left and the knife on the right in such a way that they cross over at the centre of the plate.
• Once you are finished with the meal, place the knife and the fork diagonally on the plate. The cutting edge of the knife should be pointing towards you.
Before I conclude, here is one last suggestion to remember: If your get stuck during a meal and are not sure which utensil to use, observe others seated close to you. If you then get it wrong, at least you won’t be alone.
If that blunder does happen and you do use a wrong utensil, or spill something, simply gloss it over. Apologise. Simple. Let the moment pass. After all, dining and the etiquette that goes with the experience is all about enjoying your dining. Go on, go ahead and treat yourself to the treat, don’t pass up on something that looks tempting. So, here’s to eating and the etiquette that goes with it. Let’s drink to that! Bon appetite!
