DE- CLUTTER AND ORGANISE STOP PAPER PILE – UP
• The first step is to simply not allow it to stack up - make it your slogan to ‘discard ruthlessly, discard immediately’.
• Sort out mail immediately, be it bills, receipts or bank statements. File them as soon as you open them. Use a file with multiple pockets (such as the 40-pocket Alko File in A4 size, available at any good stationer’s). Allocate pockets for different heads; label one ‘NOW for all those not-so-little things you must deal with on an ‘urgent’ basis (bills that must be paid, report cards that need signing, letters you have to answer). Give each family member one of these files and let them organise their own papers. No more ‘what did you do with my…?’
• Never keep anything on a ‘just in case’ basis. Received a flyer advertising a service - A/C maintenance, plumber on call, home-delivered meals - you might need in future? Dump it. You can easily find these in the classifieds section of your newspaper. If you absolutely must, note down the number in your phone book at once and discard the pamphlet.
• Set aside a carton for old newspapers. As soon as it’s full, call the kabadiwala.
• Keep magazines no more than a month. Then clip pages you want to keep and file. ‘Whole’ ones can go to your doctor’s waiting room.
