For example, we were dying to spend more time inside the architecturally splendid St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City but had to ruefully leave so as to be not to be left behind by the tour group.
Many families like Switzerland so much that they wish they could discontinue their tours and stay back there for a few more days!
Also, a package tour can be pretty hectic and is not recommended for a couple that wants a leisurely Swiss holiday or for those with medical problems, which require periodic attention. It is also possible that you may not like all the hotel accommodations which the tour operators provide you. This is particularly true of Paris and London where hotel accommodations are very expensive. Or you may grumble at their leaving out a couple of places which, on your own, you would have never missed. For instance, we had heard so much of Florence as a city of arts but we just passed through it.
Further, tour operators will take you to either Geneva {the tallest fountain in the world) or Zurich (remember Swiss Bank accounts?) but not to both the places.
Another loss is that when you travel on your own, your sense of adventure is definitely more heightened, whereas you are in a secure cocoon in a group. When on your own, your chance of meeting with the local population of that country is certainly more and that itself is a very good learning and enjoyable experience for many.
However, all said and done, we came back from our trip with the feeling that the advantages of package tours far outweigh those of traveling on your own. The most significant advantage comes last — a package tour is inevitably less expensive than if you were to travel alone and try to see ail these places.
