MATING OF MINDS

A recent newspaper report caught my attention. According to the report, marital strife was the number one cause for suicides in our country. It merely brought to the fore the fact that an unhappy marriage is the highest stress factor in a person’s life.
The growing number of unhappy marriages. The world over, is a cause for concern. A marriage is the basis of family life and a family is the basic unit of a society.
There can be no progress in a soci¬ety if the basic unit is unstable.
Marriage is but a mating of minds. Too many marriages are entered into, with the wrong priorities and are based on physical attraction or material rea¬sons. Small wonder that most of these marriages turn out to be bad ones.
Once the physical attraction wears off, there is no common base for the couple to interact on. But how does one find the perfect mate?
An answer to this question could definitely lead to the most successful marriage one can imagine. Like the quest for happiness, the quest for a perfect life partner is a difficult one.
Life would not be very boring if both spouses thought identically, nor is it possible to have 2 different minds with a common thought, all the time. There have to be differences and it is healthy to have them.
The secret lies in being able to respect each other’s views and ideas with a positive attitude.
By the term mating of minds, one does not really mean a converging of 2 minds. It only means the capacity to enjoy each other’s thought processes and turn them into compatible thinking even though differences exist.
