Educated and capable of standing on her own feet. Unlike her predeces¬sors, she is not prepared to be fettered to an unhappy marriage. Society’s hold on the individual is weakening and she is not willing to live in misery just because a broken marriage sets tongues wagging.
However, all said and done, a failed marital relationship is a traumatic experience for both, the man and the woman, no matter how tough they may appear to be. If there are children, the psychological scars on the kids remain sometimes for life. It is therefore important for a person to exercise caution in the choice of a life partner.
Very often girls, fed on a staple reading diet of Mills and Boon, fall into the trap of marrying guys who are only tall, dark and handsome. They do not seek or heed the advice of parents because there is a lack of rapport and the youngsters view their elders as fossils from the Paleolithic Age with equally fossilised ideas.
Their love is myopic, for they are enamoured only with outward appearances and do not perceive the negative qualities of the men. They are convinced that these good lookers are God’s gift to the woman¬kind.
Questions the wise girl would do well to ask are: Is this hunk educated? Does he earn enough? A marriage cannot survive on love and fresh air alone. Living from day to day on a shoestring budget and slogging from morning to night are not exactly conducive to romance or to being happy ever after.
Does this Don Juan take undue advantage of his looks to chase everyone in skirts? If so, then the poor wife is in for a rough time in the years ahead. Or is he kind, considerate and understanding (for these are qualities that outlast drop dead looks?
Marriage can make or break an individual. For her own peace of mind, a girl should display some maturity in the choice of a partner, for in this jet-set age, love would fly out the window pretty fast unless it has a strong anchor.
